Sami Band Weaving Workshops
Learn how to weave pickup designs on a Saami rigid heddle band loom. This workshop will provide an introduction to 3 styles of Sami band looms made by Stoorstalka – The Sigga heddle, the Sunna heddle and the Beaivi heddle.
The 3 styles of heddles will be pre-warped and ready for you to weave.
Please note:
I will not be offering workshops at this time.
I will be posting more how-to YouTube videos and articles on my ALLFIBERARTSMy YouTube Channel
Sigga Heddle
The Sigga heddle was designed to weave Lule styles of Sami bands. The Sigga has short pattern slots in the centre of the reed that allow the pattern threads to float in the centre of the shed, allowing for easy pattern pickup.
Sunna Heddle
The Sunna heddle is designed to weave Baltic styles of bands, where the background weave produces a basket weave style of background, with pattern floats on top.
Beaivi Heddle
The Beaivi heddle has 2 sets of holes that allows for pattern pickup to be done across the width of the band.
Weaving the pattern creates a mirror image on the reverse of the band. As you weave the band, the pattern threads are lifted to the surface of the band or dropped to run below the surface, creating the patterns. The pattern will be in reverse on the back side of the band. This technique is similar to the Finnish style of Finnweave or double weave pickup.
[
A double hole rigid heddle is similar to the standard weaving reeds that have one set of holes and one set of slots. These carry the ground weave of the band. A second set of holes has been added above the first set of holes. The top row of holes carry the warp pattern threads and are usually a thicker weight of yarn and are a contrasting colour.
